Random Factoid #354

17 07 2010

This picture was taken from the post.

This is a question mainly for WordPress bloggers – mainly because I don’t know how Blogger/Blogspot does things.

You know that weird section on your “blog stats” page called INCOMING LINKS?  It’s where you see who has linked to you; I guess a sort of alternative pingback.  Mine is usually filled with LAMBscores, LAMB Chops, etc.

But recently, there has been a strange link in there that just will not go away.  It’s a post from a sketchy looking site called “The Blog Conglomerate” called What Are New York’s “Boyfriend Politicians” Doing to Single Women…

Now, I don’t write about anything other than the movies, so it struck me as very strange that I would be linked to from this post.  I looked around and eventually found that my Random Factoid #325 was listed under their “Related Websites.”  That factoid, for everyone’s information, was about the late Pixar animator Joe Ranft.  Nothing to do with politics.

So I have to ask – has this happened to anyone else?  This is just really, really strange, and I don’t quite know what to make of it.

I wouldn’t worry about that kind of stuff. AM receives numerous amount of questionable link backs which are usually spam sites. There is also a fair amount of people hotlinking pictures from our site which is a bit annoying. I sometime replace the pictures just to teach them a lesson 😉 Last time, I replaced a Jake Gyllenhaal picture with a sign, “I’m stealing bandwidth from Anomalous Material”

Oh gosh, I think I’ve linked to one of your pics before. I’m sorry to have offended the great Castor. I may have actually linked to the Gyllenhaal pic…

Please don’t Castorate me!!

“Please don’t Castorate me!!”

– I got a good laugh out of that one. But they are right, don’t worry about it too much. I have found that we have gotten linked for some really sketchy sites and found on Google for when people type the most perverted or weird things.

Yeah, I got an obscene amount of “male nudity” and “naked guys” redirects in my first couple of months … I was really worried then as a neophyte blogger.

I’ve found I get some very strange incoming links from the WordPress related post widget. It can be something completely unrelated or something that is related in the smallest of ways – like a film review about Top Gun being linked to an engineering post about airplane engine parts!

Oh, Castor…how do you find out who is displaying your own images on other websites?

Oh, yeah. I get that all the time. If you have something in your title or the body of your post, it pings to some wackadoo place. It depends. Most of the time, I let it be spam. It comes with the territory.

Just today alone, I have two incoming links from spam websites I don’t dare open for fear of infecting my computer. I feel used.

And a few dozen like that every day. Don’t know why they link to me, though.
